The film that made Steven Spielberg a household name, “Jaws” was an enormous commercial success and became one of the best known films in the history of cinema. The story unfolds on a fictional summer resort Amity Island, where a young woman goes missing after skinny dipping. Her body is later found on the beach by a deputy chief of police. The medical examiner informs police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) that the girl was eaten by a shark. Brody wants to close the beaches for safety reasons, but it’s the middle of the tourist season and the mayor is worried that closing the beaches would do grave damage to Amity Island’s main source of income. After another boy dies the whole Island goes into a panicked frenzy, with amateur shark hunters swarming in to try the catch the predator. A tiger shark is caught, leading people to believe that the danger has passed, but the contents of its stomach show no human remains. A local fisherman is found dead, but the mayor still refuses to close the beaches. Fourth of July brings many tourists to Amity Island, and Brody, a marine biologist and a shark hunter set out to hunt the true killer shark. On the open sea the shark circles their boat, revealing it’s gargantuan measures to the disbelieving three-man crew. The pursuit lasts all night long, with the shark appearing only to do some damage to the boat then swimming away. Tomorrow morning the trio makes a decisive effort to eliminate the gigantic predator, but the shark proves itself to be even harder to kill than it first appeared. In the end, Brody manages to kill the shark by shoving a scuba tank into the shark’s mouth and then shooting at it to make it explode.
