This 2009 clay animated black comedy features a star studded voice cast with names such as Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette and Eric Bana in starring roles. The story follows the relationship of two unlikely pen pals spanning decades. Marry is an 8 years old Australian girl, the only child in a lover class family with a distant father and an alcoholic mother. With no other way to entertain herself she takes up letter correspondence, choosing a random name from a New York City phonebook. Her accidental pen pal is Max, a 44-years old morbidly obese man who has problems creating bonds with other people and rarely leaves his apartment. They strike up a correspondence which lasts for many years, and we see their letters helping both of them deal with personal issues. After spending some time in an institution, Max manages to conquer some of his social anxieties, while Mary grows up, gets married and becomes a psychiatrist. When she decides to write a psychological book detailing his relationship with Max and his history of mental issues, Max is outraged and decides to cut off all ties with Mary. This sends Mary into a tail spin, and she resorts to alcohol, gives up her academic career and gets divorced. Ultimately, Max forgives her and sends her another letter, but Mary doesn’t know it until her neighbor brings her the package that was sitting on her front porch for days. Awaken from her stupor, Mary travels to New York to finally meet Max in person. She comes to his apartment and finds Max dead on his bed, with his eyes open towards the ceiling and a serene expression on his face. The entire ceiling was covered with Mary’s letters, and she breaks down into tears realizing how much their friendship meant to Max.
