Several years after having to deal with his first mission impossible, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is now trying to lay low. He is still an IMF secret agent, but now he doesn't do the field work. His only job is to train the new agents, who will later go to do the field work. And the reason for that is that he is involved with someone, a girl called Julia (Michelle Monaghan), who he loves and wants to marry her. At one point, Ethan finds out from one of his friends John Musgrave (Billy Crudup), who is also an IMF agent, that a new trainee they have sent on a mission was captured. So, he gets the help of his weapon dealers and tries to get her out. When he manages to get a hold of the guy who caught her, he also manages to kill her as well, because she had an implant put into her that killed her on a remote. After he gets back to headquarters Ethan gets discharged because of what he had done. So, as it was expected, Ethan goes off the book and goes large in order to bring the arms dealer back to the agency so he could clear his name once again. But, as he comes back, he finds out that Julia is abducted.
