What is the movie Mulholland Dr. about?
With its viewing audiences firmly divided into the “frustrated” and “delighted” camps, “Mulholland Drive” is one of David Lynch’s most polarizing films, as well as most acclaimed. Having gone through a production odyssey – starting as a pilot for a television series, being rejected and ultimately remade into a feature film, it features a non linear, cryptic narrative that many found confusing and bewildering. It follows several plot lines and seemingly independent vignettes as they gradually intertwine. A young aspiring actress Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) arrives to Los Angeles, “the city of dreams”. She arrives to her aunt’s apartment where she finds an unknown woman who introduces herself as Rita and who she believes is there with her aunt’s approval. Rita is actually an amnesiac who survived a car crash on Mulholland Drive and has no recollection of the event, or anything else, for that matter. In the meantime, director Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) is watching his entire life fall apart. The mobsters financing his latest movie are pushing an actress he doesn’t want to cast, his wife his having an affair, and all of his bank accounts are blocked. He will cross paths with Rita and Betty as they search for clues about Rita’s true identity, everything will be turned upside down until it is no longer certain who is who, what is what, and if anything is even real.
