In this 1936 comedy drama set in the Great Depression era, William Powell stars as Godfrey Parke, down on his luck man living in the dumps. One day he is approached by two wealthy socialite sisters and asked to be the “forgotten man” for their scavenger hunt. He makes an enemy of Cornelia Bullock (Gail Patrick), much to the delight of her sister Irene (Carole Lombard) who later takes him on as the family butler. Serving in a wealthy family proves to be not as easy going as Godfrey may have thought, since he is a constant target of not only Cornelia’s attempts at revenge, but also of Irene’s surprising romantic advances. Cornelia attempts to frame him by hiding her pearl necklace under his pillow and reporting them stolen. He is cleared of her charges, but when Irene’s feelings for him are made public he resigns his post. Meanwhile, Irene and Cornelia’s father has run into some financial troubles, but crafty mister Parke comes back in to save the family from the financial ruin. Later we see Godfrey as a successful night club owner who provides his friends from the dumps with work and a place to stay. He is seemingly happy to be out of the whole Bullock family affair, but when Irene visits him with intents of rekindling the long forgotten flames of love, he is grudgingly, but willingly, enticed into marrying her.
