After saving a young Portuguese girl from jumping off of the bridge, professor Raimund Gregorius, played by Jeremy Irons, decides to abandon his ordinary boring life and go on an adventure that will lead him to Lisbon, following some of the trails in the book he found in her coat. As he starts his journey, he reveals who the author was and that he had been a Portuguese revolutionary in time of a dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. While tracking down authors sister as well as his resistance friends, Raimund discovers twists and plots that had been going on in the time of the dictatorship and gets answers to some of the questions that had been in his mind for years. This journey does not only tell the story of political times and intrigue in Portugal, but also of love in the time of revolution.
Based on a Pascal Mercier best selling international novel, director Billie August made an incredible and award winning movie that was released in December 2013. His flashback technique, that he had already used in movies like "Citizen Cane" made all the pieces of the puzzle fit just perfectly. In addition to that, the role was a perfect fit to the well known and experienced actor like Jeremy Irons, where one can see his true acting potential on screen.
