David Chase is experienced writer and director that proved himself with The Sopranos. His latest achievement is Not Fade Away. It is two hour long drama and is placed in time between 1962 and 1964. Costumes are accurate and appropriate for that time. Music is the one final touch that will put you in that time of drugs, sex and rock & roll. We follow Douglas from New Jersey while he is in high school. In that particular period Douglas had ride on emotional roller-coaster. Average young boy seeing himself as a looser is trying to impress the girl. While he was talking with Joe in front of the music store band Don’t Fade Away is made. Like all young people from that ’60 Douglas and his friends are more learning form doing stuff making mistakes. Story is focusing on his relations with girlfriend, members of the band and his family. We can see rapid character development as Douglas is growing up. So many boys had dream to have successful band, but almost none of them made it. Few made it to the top and we all know who they are. Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Buddy Holly are bands that Don’t Fade Away was looking up to. That is the sad part of this movie. Driven with great desire and young band started with big expectations but like many others they crashed. All that ups, downs and disappointments are sprinkled with funny things and told with sense of humour. That makes Don’t Fade Away straight forward drama. Drama that will leave you little bit sad.
