Junior is only nine years old; he’s a small boy living in a Hispanic middle class family. His hair is stubbornly curly, so he calls them “bad hair”. He becomes obsessed with the idea of straightening his hair so he detests his own “pelo malo” (bad hair). He is so eager to have his hair straightened because he wants to look nice and fashionable in his yearbook picture. He desperately wants to look like a well-known pop singer with long, ironed hair. This obsession makes him go crazy and puts him at odds with his mother Marta. Junior makes a lot of efforts to look beautiful and make his mother proud of him. The more he tries to make his mother love him, the more she detests and rejects him. Unfortunately Junior finds himself cornered and facing quite a painful decision. Marta is devoid of strength as a result of her struggle for survival in Caracas. She doesn’t have any time for her son’s ridiculous obsession. She doesn’t understand why anybody would be so concerned about his appearance when they literally have nothing to eat.
