People have the necessity to compare themselves to each other. And as much as one family has problems, they tend to see who else has the same problems and most of all, how they deal with them. This movie is based on true events, the story was co-written and directed by Alex Kurtzman. The main part of the story revolves around Sam (Chris Pine), who is a salesman and has a girlfriend Hannah (Olivia Wilde). One day, he gets informed that his estranged father died. With his mother Lillian (Michelle Pfeiffer) having a heart condition, Sam sets off alone to California to attend the funeral. He meets the fathers lawyer and gets an unusual inheritance. He gets a small bag with 150 thousand dollars in it and a note to give it to some woman and kid he has never seen before in his life. It is only then that he finds out, that his father had a family before this one and that he has a half sister Frankie (Elizabeth Banks), who has a young son Josh (Michael Hall). Slowly he manages to get closer and make bonds, not yet revealing who he actually is. Over the time, the truth gets revealed and they reconnect and stay close, as a real family.
