Pairing a respected character actor with an up and coming Hollywood superstar proved to be an absolute success with “Rain Man”, a 1988 comedy drama which won Oscars in four major categories (best director, best actor, best screenplay and best picture) and became the highest grossing film of the year. Director Barry Levinson won an Oscar, as did Dustin Hoffman for his portrayal of an autistic savant. Coming off of the success of “Top Gun” and “Cocktail”, Tom Cruise co-stars as Charlie Babbitt, a self centered California yuppy who finds himself in a bit of financial trouble when his car import business suffers delays. Upon hearing that his wealthy estranged father had died, Charlie and his girlfriend Susanna (Valeria Golino) travel to Cincinnati to settle the estate. Charlie is surprised to find that his father left the bulk of his fortunes to an unnamed trustee. He soon finds out that he has an older brother Raymond (Hoffman), an autistic living in a mental institution. Charlie gets Raymond out of the hospital with the intent on becoming his custodian and controlling his money. Raymond and Charlie go on a cross country road trip to California, and gradually Charlie grows more and more affectionate towards Raymond, which forces him to make a choice between continuing his greedy ways or making room in his life for his long lost brother.
