Rebel, or Hesher tells the story about a young kid named T.J (Devin Brochu), who loses his mother at a very young age. Slowly he falls into depression. His father Paul (Rainn Wilson) is on pills and they live with their grandmother Madeleine (Piper Laurie). Soon, two of them get their paths crossed by Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a skinny and tattooed heavy-metal guy with every other word that comes from his mouth a curse. After he is attacked by a school bully, Dustin, T.J gets saved by Nicole (Natalie Portman), a grocery store worker who simply is on the right place at the right time. After being the witness of T.J's bullying, Hesher sets Dustin's car on fire but gets released when the police investigates the case due to lack of evidence. After catching T.J spying on Nicole, him and Hesher walk her home. And just when it seems like he's a good guy, he trashes another man's swimming pool and back yard, as well as set the whole thing on fire and leave both T.J and Nicole alone there. As the life makes them cross their paths again, Hesher tells them some private stuff about himself and all of them manage to bond somehow. It is a pretty unusual movie that will leave you confused and emotional at the same time.
