Most of the guys feel like their lives change for worse after they get married. Ok, maybe not right away, but when the kids come, definitely. There's no reason why Shrek would be an exception. Shrek Forever After deals with what goes on after he and Fiona get married and go back in his swamp. At one point, having to juggle three ogre babies, his lovely wife, lack of his social life, not being able to hang out with his friends like before and it all starts stressing him out bit by bit. He gets into a middle-age crisis. At one point, he goes out to take a walk, pretty furious, and comes across Rumpelstiltskin. Cunningly, he proposes Shrek to trade one day in his life and in return get all his problems away. Not thinking straight, Shrek agrees to that, but doesn't realize soon enough that Rumpelstiltskin will take the day he was born. That means, the future is not what he knows. There is no scary ogre from the swamp, Donkey never got together with the dragon, they never met and worst of all- he never met Fiona. Also, Fiona was never rescued, which turned her into a fearless warrior princess, which needs to be fought. And the one thing to break the spell is love's true kiss. What comes as a problem is, when Shek does kiss Fiona, nothing happens, because she doesn't even know him and doesn't love him. Now, Shrek must find the way to get his regular future back.
