“Shrek” was the newly founded DreamWorks’ first foray onto the field of animation films. Its screenplay was adapted from a children’s picture book “Shrek!” by William Steig. It was both a commercial and a critical success, establishing DreamWorks as the prime competitor to Pixar. It tells the tale of Shrek, a terrifying green ogre with a short fuse who lives a secluded life in his swamp. When one day he finds his swamp crowded with a whole bunch of fairytale creatures exiled from the city of Duloc by Lord Farquaad, Shrek decides to go to Duloc to convince Lord Farquaad to take all the fairytale creatures back. On his way to Duloc he is accompanied by a talking donkey, apparently the only creature that knows the way. In the meantime, Farquaad has decided to marry Princess Fiona, who is imprisoned in a tall tower. Farquaad stages a tournament in which the winner will receive the honor of freeing Fiona and bringing her to him. Shrek wins the competition and agrees with Farquaad to save Fiona in exchange for the return of the fairytale creatures. Shrek and donkey rescue Fiona, who has a dark secret – when the night falls, she turns into an ogre. Shrek and Fiona fall for each other, but Shrek is later convinced that she hates ogres, brings her to Farquaad and returns to his now again vacated swamp. Sometime later donkey pays him a visit and convinces him to go back to Duloc and fight for her love.
