Set in present day India, “Slumdog Millionaire” is an adaptation of the book “Q & A” by Vikas Swarup. Masterfully directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle, this lush production tells the tale of Jamal Malik, a young man from the slums of Mumbai who achieves great success on the Indian version of the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” game show. Being poorly educated, he is suspected of cheating and detained by the police who interrogate him on the source of his knowledge. Throughout the movie he explains how he knows the answers and how they all relate to the events in his own life. Each question and the subsequent answer shed more life on his fascinating life story. The flashbacks tell the tale of Jamal, his brother Salim and their lifelong friend and Jamal’s eternal love Latika, from their miserable lives on the slum streets, to their eventual separation and Salim’s rise through the ranks of the most dangerous crime lord in Mumbai. The last question brings us back to the present moment, revealing that the story is still far from finished and that its resolution is very much in the hands of the ruthless crime lord who Salim works for. Will Jamal manage to win the grand prize and reunite with the love of his life?
