The 50th installment of the Walt Disney Animated Classics series had a long and bumpy road to the world wide cinemas. Six years in the making and with the reported budget of well over 200 million dollars, it is the most expensive animated production ever, as well as one of the most expensive movies in general. However, it easily found its way to the top 100 highest grossing films ever. It tells the story of princess Rapunzel, a young woman whose hair has magical healing powers. Rapunzel is kidnapped as a child by Mother Gothel who wishes to use the magical powers of Rapunzel’s hair to preserve her youth. Mother Gothel raises Rapunzel as her own child, keeping her in an isolated tower. As Rapunzel is nearing her 18th birthday, she keeps asking her “mother” to let her explore the world, which she refuses. When Flynn Rider, a wandering thief, gets caught up in the tower, he helps Rapunzel flee. The pair sets off on an adventure that will have them chased not only by Mother Gothel, but also by the king’s guards in search of Flynn, who stole the kidnapped princess’ crown. Ultimately, Rapunzel is recaptured by Mother Gothel and Flynn is imprisoned and sentenced to death. However, with the help of unexpected accomplices Flynn manages to escape and run back to the tower, where he is mortally wounded by Gothel. Rapunzel chooses to give up her freedom to heal Flynn. However, after Flynn is healed he cuts off Rapunzel’s hair, causing Gothel’s age to rapidly catch up with her as she crumbles into dust.
