The Butterfly Room is the first English language movie by an Italian writer and director Jonathan Zarantonello. He managed to make an intriguing horror film that caters both to the fans of the old horror movies and the new ones. Script is very well written and the actors do an amazing job at performing their roles. The story in The Butterfly Room revolves around an entomologist named Ann. Ann is an old lonely woman who has a bipolar disorder and is rejected by her daughter Dorothy because of an incident which has happened in her childhood. Dorothy meets a girl named Ann in the mall who quickly gains her trust and becomes her companion receiving allowance in return. Ann finds out that Alice manipulates older women and visits her mother to discover that she is a prostitute who uses Alice to make money for her. Ann reacts violently towards Alice's mother and it triggers her madness. The movie then moves to the present day, Ann meets a girl named Julia and becomes close to her, but forbids her from entering her butterfly room. Julia wants to find out the secret of the butterfly room. Even tho this is an American movie, the director manages to recreate the feel of Italian Giallo movies. The atmosphere is very creepy and foreboding and the entire movie reminiscences of the old horror movies. If you are a fan of horror movies, especially of the old Italian horror movies, definitely check The Butterfly Room out, it is definitely worth your time.
