A horror classic and an everlasting fan favorite, “The Exorcist” holds the distinction of being the first horror movie ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for the best picture. A surprising box office smash hit that has proven popular both with critics and the audiences, it was nominated for 10 Oscars in total, winning two of them, including the best adapted screenplay for William Peter Blatty who adapted it from his own novel of the same name. It tells the tale of the exorcism of a demon possessed 12 year old girl. When actress Chris McNeil (Ellen Burstyn) starts to notice changes in her daughter Regan (Linda Blair), such as constant use of swear words and surprising strength, she takes her to the doctors who find nothing wrong with her. In reality, she is possessed by an ancient evil demon called Pazuzu. After Chris’ friend dies under mysterious circumstances, she begins to suspect that her daughter played a part in it. Ultimately, it falls on two priests – one an older archeologist with an interest in the occult, and the other a younger man going through a crisis of faith – to perform an exorcism on Regan and make the evil demon leave her young body.
