A British black comedy directed by Alexander Mackendrick and written by American screen writer William Rose (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award), “The Ladykillers” is a story about a sweet old lady who finds herself surrounded by a group of hardened criminals. It boasts a large ensemble cast, featuring notable actors such as Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom, Cecil Parker, Danny Green and Jack Warner. Five strange men rent rooms in the house of Mrs. Louisa Alexandra Wilberforce, a sweet and eccentric old lady with no one but her parrot as her company. Mrs. Wilberforce likes to busy herself by investigating the neighborhood in search of any misdeeds, and reporting them in the local police station. Police officers have been duped by Mrs. Wilberforce’s false claims numerous times before, and these days they simply indulge her and then ignore her tips. Even though Mrs. Wilberforce has her eye on anything strange going on in the neighborhood, she fails to see anything suspicious about five men living in her house, posing as a string quintet. Unbeknownst to “Mrs. W”, the supposed musicians are actually hardened criminals planning to rob a security van at the neighboring King’s Cross station. They manage to pull off a robbery, but when Mrs. W discovers their crime they have a tough decision to make, a decision whose outcome will lead to some high comedy and leave a trail of dead bodies behind.
