Religious people know to cross some boundaries from time to time. Sometimes that's about how often you go to church, or how many times you pray during the day, but for some, being a good religious person is almost the same thing as showing the world that everything is just perfect. Eileen (Kathleen Turner) is a middle aged woman, a wife with two grown up children, who are happy with their lives. When she hears that she has been nominated for the award 'Catholic woman of the year', she gets into that state of mind where everything has to be more than perfect. That's when all funny situations start to happen. At first, we discover that her daughter Shannon Cleary (Emily Deschanel) is not only pregnant, but is also in a lesbian relationship. The other situation is when she finds out that her son is leaving his wife and children, because he fell in love with a girl who works in a beauty saloon. At very end we get to see how her marriage is falling apart, with her husband being an alcoholic. Throughout the whole time, Eileen is struggling to do both what she thinks the society would accept and what she thinks is right for the people she loves, but doesn't seem to be getting there. In all that chaos, one competitive neighbour comes in the mix, as she is also nominated for the same award, and her life seems to be more than perfect. The only question is, will Eileen do what needs to please the society or what's right for her family?
