Only a modest success upon its release, Rob Reiner’s “Princess Bride” was immediately a critical darling, and it has garnered a cult following in the years after its theatrical run. Nowadays it is considered a classic, both in the fantasy and romance genres. Robin Wright plays the role of Buttercup, a beautiful young woman living on a farm in the country of Florin. She and her farm boy Westley (Cary Elwes) fall in love with each other, and Westley goes away to seek his fortunes so he could marry Buttercup. Westley’s ship is attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts and he is presumed dead. Five years have passed, and Buttercup has agreed to marry Prince Humperdinck who’s set to inherit the throne of Florin. Before the two can marry Buttercup is kidnapped by three outlaws. They are followed by a masked man dressed in black who challenges and defeats all three of them to save Buttercup, learning in the process that it was Humperdinck who hired them to kidnap her, so he could start a war with a neighboring country. When the masked man introduces himself as Dread Pirate Roberts Buttercup pushes him off a cliff for killing Westley, but she soon realizes that the masked man is Westley. They are then captured by Humperdinck who throws Westley into a dungeon and rushes to marry Buttercup. Incarcerated Westley will get help from unlikely allies in order to escape and prevent Prince Humperdinck from marrying the love of his life.
