Eric Lomax, played by Jeremy Irvine, was one of thousands of Allied prisoners of war who were forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during the world war 2. Years later he meets Patti on a train and immediately falls in love. Patti was well aware of the condition in which Eric is, but she was determined to help him overcome his problems and get rid of his demons. She discovers that a young Japanese officer who was her husband's tormentor and now has to make an important decision which will influence their lives. She has to think whether her husband should confront his captor and if she would stand by him without caring about the actions he may take. The movie is, simply put, wonderful, the story of Eric is amazing and those who know nothing about it should have it remain that way before watching the movie in order to not spoil anything. The Railway Man has some pretty intense scenes and some viewers could have troubles watching them, but it is well worth it because the viewer needs to know everything which has happened to Eric in order to fully appreciate his decision in the end of the movie. Actors managed to do a wonderful job, they portray all of the emotions astonishingly well and everyone who enjoys stories about war will enjoy this movie. Get ready for a tale of survival, revenge, forgiveness and ethics, it will be a bumpy ride, horrifying during some moments, but with a satisfying end which is bound to make some people cry.
