The movie is set in the USA during the Civil War. As the war devastates the country, on the outskirts of the Civil War slave-owners and traders continue their usual business. Will is a fatherless teenager, who survives by working with a white generous hunter gang. The hunters send Will to earn trust of runaway slaves and lure them back to the South. Will is on a very dangerous mission in the free North. His main goal is to find a fugitive freedman, Nate, but when he finds the freedman things go wrong and both of them find themselves on the run. Nate and Will spend much time together and the bond between them unexpectedly grows. Soon Will becomes absorbed by conflicting emotions because he has to face a gut-wrenching final decision. “The Retrieval” is grounded on historical research and serves as an insight into the dark period between freedom and slavery. It also exemplifies horrific moral dilemmas that appear when people are being forced to betray their friends.
