What is the movie The Sapphires about?
Sapphires are something special. They aren't easy to find and they sure are precious. Well, these four girls are just like that and the name of their group suits them perfectly. The story is set in 1968, when there were lots of wars, civil protests, the clash between young and old generations. But that is for the USA and the rest of the world. In Australia it was only survival on minimal proportions the problem. Four Aboriginal girls, Gail (Deborah Mailman) Julie (Jessica Mauboy), Kay (Shari Sebbens), and Cynthia McCrae (Miranda Tapsell), who are friends, great singers and are very talented dream of becoming famous singers one day. So, they decide to do something about it, when they meet Dave Lovelace (Chris O'Dowd). Dave is an Irish talent scout, but he is also an alcoholic. So, seeing these four girls, his eyes start sparkling as he only sees great money. His intention is to get these four girls to perform for American soldiers who are stationed in Vietnam. After all, they do need some fun around there. Pushing them in that same direction, girls accept their first gig and have no clue just how dangerous that is. This biography comedy drama is a piece that will keep your attention for the whole 103 minutes of its lasting with no problem.
