The Singing Detective is actually the story about an author of the detective novel. Didn't see that one coming, did you? It begins as the famous novel writer Dan Dark (Robert Downey Jr.) ends up in the hospital because of a rare and pretty unknown skin disease. This is not a simple and everyday case, because it is pretty painful and there is a danger that his face might actually get totally disfigured. As he has nothing to do but lay down and wait, while the nurses and doctors keep running some tests and giving him medications, treatments and everything they can think of, including the painkillers, this lonely writer's mind is doing his job- thinking about a new novel with crime story. Now, Dan is shifting from the reality into the fantasy world, where he is one of the main characters, he is the famous detective Dan Dark. And there are three rules: 1- There is always a dame; 2- Someone always gets hurt; 3- Reality is stranger than fiction. And what's best of all- he is the best detective with an amazing singing voice and, boy he does love to sing. So the audience gets to see throughout the whole movie how the reality and fiction work for Dan Dark.
