From talented writer and director Roland Joffé comes a breathtaking biography drama about war, drama, and everything after that. On one side we have Jose Maria Escobar, who is a young priest in the time of war and is struggling to keep his faith and not to give himself to the world in which rules chaos and hate. And on the other side is Manolo, whose mind is filled with hatred, vengeance and confusion. He is fighting for the right thing, but at one point, things get so mixed up that he doesn't even know any more which side he's on. And the inner chaos begins to rage in him. Throughout the war the audience gets to see how these two characters develop and grow in the same circumstances and in the same world. The movie presents just how senseless wars are and how people deal with their moral dilemmas as well as how they become obsessed with hate, make lots of terrible mistakes and how they try to redeem themselves after everything is done. And it's back to the beginning every time. Director and writer Roland Joffé did an amazing job in portraying Spain in that period pretty accurately, along with amazing details that made 1937 so unique. This movie is deeply spiritual, intense and reflects the worst in humans.
