Based on the book of the same name by Irvine Welsh, “Trainspotting” (1995) helped introduce a new generation of talented English actors like Ewan McGregor and Johnny Lee Miller to the broader public. The British Film Institute ranked it number 10 on its list of Top 100 British Films. It follows the story of a group of young heroin addicts in poverty stricken late 80’s Edinburgh. The main protagonist and the story’s narrator is Mark “Rent Boy” Renton (McGregor), a heroin addict looking to get clean while his circle of friends keeps drawing him back in. He manages to shake the addiction, but boredom and depression leads him to start using again. Tommy, the only clean member of the bunch, starts using after his girlfriend dumps him. Renton’s parents make an intervention and lock him up in his room as he goes through withdrawal. Renton suffers a number of bone chilling hallucinations, but ultimately comes out of it all clean again. He gets tested for HIV and surprisingly tests negative, while his friend Tommy has already managed to contract HIV. In an attempt to distance himself from the crew Renton moves to London where he starts a career in real estate, but soon he is dragged back in to his former crew’s plots when he gets a surprise visit in his London flat. He is convinced to lend his friends money for a large drug deal, and then to try the goods for himself. With the drug deal going according to plans and the gang celebrating afterwards, Renton decides to steal the money and leave his friends behind.
